to all my white followers who stew in unnecessary guilt trying to come to terms with the privilege you have, watch this

Racism isn’t always slurs. Differences in how people choose to (or refuse to) communicate with others are a really common way in which day to day racial discrimination manifests. Most often, when addressed, people attempt to hide it, just as in this video, behind statements like “who, me?”, “i treat everyone like that” & “that’s just the rules”. Black people, particularly black women are already working against preconceived notions that we’re angry or hyperaggressive, so we’re cornered into positions of domicility and humiliation, lest we escalate a situation. White privilege permeates every aspect of life, from writing a check at a store or having a comversation with a cashier to getting called in for job interviews and chosen for schools. If you have it, weaponize it for good as often as you can.

Alternately, if you choose not to, that’s on you, but in that case refrain from calling yourself an ally or pretending you actually care about black lives. It takes one phone call & a white/non black person who “feels threatened” to put black people’s lives in danger. De-escalating a situation when you can, as uncomfortable as it may be, could quite literally save a life. Something to think about.
